Illegal Mining Poses Danger to Residents of Informal Settlement in Riverlea

Illegal mining continues to be a huge problem requiring urgent attention. Residents of Riverlea have repeatedly complained about illegal mining operations in the area.

Zamimpilo, an informal settlement in ward 68 of Riverlea, is surrounded by Sasol gas lines, Transnet fuel pipes and Rand Water pipes. The concern is if contact is made with gas and fuel lines from illegal mining operationg, it could trigger fatal explosions. This could affect other surrounding areas

The police are aware of the illegal gold mining.
