Balaka vendors forced authorities from Council to close one of the toilets in town owing to poor sanitation. “Balaka has had some of the markets operate without water which has been of concern to the business community in the district,” said one of the vendors. Balaka Chairperson Haroon Matipa echoed that some council’s employees work without gloves and proper protective gear citing markets like Kankao which stopped paying revenue owing to the same pretext, among others. The business community also accused the council of negligence in slaughterhouses as one of the isolated cases that would escalate cholera which is already on the blink. Council officials are yet to comment on the matter.
