Zambian boarding schools contributing yo deforestation

By Alick Sinkala

Most Zambian boarding schools have been reported to be using fire wood as the main source of power in terms of cooking though electric power works as a supplement. This has been encouraging deforestation in the country which is the cutting down of trees. Even when various campaigns and sensitization programs have been going on around, schools have continued to be the major players in this. Luwingu Boarding Secondary School as our example was opened in 1966 and up to date it has continued to cut down a lot of trees just for a single term to pass and in order for the pupils to have their three meals daily. Climate change mitigation highly depend on the trees. The birds and other living creatures have been left without homes as they occupy trees for their inhabitation. The government should find the new means of addressing this challenge
