“This is a third case of cholera reported in Balaka although another occured at Mmanga but was reported to Machinga District Hospital. The other two were admitted to the intensive care unit but were discharged after getting better,” Nyirenda said.

She said a second sample has been sent to the Community Health Services Unit (CHSU) in Lilongwe for laboratory confirmatory test.

She disclosed that currently the district has no any case of cholera outbreak.

Balaka civil society organisations health thematic chairperson Darlington Thole said the network will work with the district health office to contain the disease.

“It is unfortunate that we have lost a life to cholera in Balaka. The CSO network will assist in advocating for technical support such as provision of chlorine dispensers and enhancing awareness,” Thole said.
